The definitive guide to commissioning the world's finest suits. From Savile Row to Naples, discover the art of true bespoke tailoring — where every garment is a masterpiece created uniquely for you.
Savile Row in Mayfair, London, has been the epicentre of men's bespoke tailoring for over 200 years. From royal warrants to Hollywood legends, the Row's storied houses — Huntsman, Anderson & Sheppard, Henry Poole & Co, and Gieves & Hawkes — have dressed prime ministers, rock stars, and kings. A Savile Row suit requires 60–80 hours of handwork, over 5,000 hand-stitches, and anywhere from two to four fittings over 8–12 weeks.
Founded 1849. Strong shoulders, nipped waist. House of Kingsman.
Founded 1906. Soft, draped "London cut." Prince of Wales' tailor.
Founded 1806. Invented the dinner jacket. Royal Warrant holders.
Italy rivals Savile Row with its own centuries-old tailoring heritage. Naples champions the soft, unstructured "spalla camicia" (shirt shoulder) — light as air, with minimal padding and maximum sprezzatura. Kiton, Cesare Attolini, and Rubinacci are the masters of the Neapolitan school. Milan offers a more structured, refined silhouette — Brioni, Caraceni, and A. Caraceni lead the northern Italian tradition. A Kiton suit requires 45+ hours by 45 master tailors.
Naples. Ultra-light, hand-stitched, vicuña specialists.
Rome. James Bond's tailor. Powerful, elegant Roman silhouette.
Naples. Three generations. The pinnacle of Neapolitan tailoring.
Naples & Milan. The original Neapolitan house. Unlined jackets.
A bespoke suit is not bought — it is commissioned. Over 8 to 12 weeks, your tailor guides you through an intricate process of consultation, measurement, pattern making, and multiple fittings. Each step is essential. Each detail is deliberate. The result is a garment that fits your body — and only your body — with absolute precision.
You meet your cutter. Discuss style, purpose, fabric preferences, shoulder construction (structured vs. soft), lapel shape, buttons, lining, pockets, and every conceivable detail. This is a conversation — the tailor learns who you are.
The cutter takes 40+ measurements — far beyond chest, waist, and inseam. Shoulder slope, posture (erect vs. stooped), arm pitch, neck angle. These measurements are your body's unique architectural blueprint.
A unique paper pattern is drafted from your measurements — never from a pre-existing block. This pattern is yours alone and is stored by the house for future commissions. No two bespoke patterns are alike.
The basted garment (loosely stitched together with white thread) is tried on. The cutter assesses balance, drape, collar fit, and silhouette. Major adjustments are made — sleeves repositioned, chest adjusted, shoulders re-cut.
The garment is recut, restitched, and approaching completion. Refinements to sleeve pitch, trouser break, jacket length. The lapel roll begins to emerge. This is where the suit starts to feel like yours.
The finished suit — hand-pressed, buttonholes hand-sewn, your name embroidered inside. A final mirror check. It fits you like nothing you've ever worn. You take delivery of a garment that will last decades.
The soul of a bespoke suit lies in its fabric. The finest houses source from legendary mills — Loro Piana, Dormeuil, Holland & Sherry, Scabal, Zegna. Super numbers (Super 100s through Super 250s) indicate the fineness of wool fibre. Beyond wool lie the world's rarest textiles: vicuña (the "fibre of the gods" at $4,000+ per metre), qiviut from Arctic muskoxen, and sea island cotton.
